Dermatology FoundationResearch Award Programs Information and Applications All Dermatology Foundation awards are intended to advance the research careers of young individuals in dermatology and cutaneous biology, with the emphasis on research benefiting the dermatology community at large. It is the expectation that the recipients of these awards will be tomorrow's clinical leaders in dermatology, helping shape the future of the entire specialty. All research must be conducted in the U.S. under the sponsorship of a division or department of dermatology. The Dermatology Foundation does not fund projects to be performed as part of the U.S. Government research program (except V.A.) or those to be performed at private foundations without an academic affiliation to dermatology. All applicants are subject to peer review by the Dermatology Foundation's Medical and Scientific Committee. Committee members, who serve pro bono, do not participate in evaluation of applications from institutions with which they are associated or applications in which they have a real or apparent conflict of interest. Scientist Career Development Award: $55,000 stipend
(renewable up to two years) aimed
at clinically oriented academic
investigators. The purpose is to assist in
transition from fellowship to established
investigator, and applications are accepted from
junior investigators in the early stages of their
academic careers. These awards are intended to
advance the research careers of individuals in
dermatology and cutaneous biology, with the
emphasis on research benefiting the dermatology
community at large. Applicants must have
completed training in a U.S. dermatology
residency program and be faculty members in a
department or division of dermatology. The
applicant must have initial training (2-3 year
fellowship or post doctoral training) in relevant
research. Clinical Career Development
Award In Dermatologic Surgery: $55,000 stipend
(renewable for up to two years) to
support research projects that will further the
practice of dermatologic surgery and develop the
teaching, research and leadership careers of
dermatologic surgeons. The applicant must
have completed at least one year post-residency
surgical training, hold a junior faculty
appointment in a division or department of
dermatology and be no more than five (5) years
post-residency. The applicant's mentor
and environment are critical ingredients of a
successful application. Candidates may
apply for this award during the first year of
post-residency surgical training so that the
award would begin after completion of the
post-residency surgical training. The
proposal must be focused with clear aims which,
upon successful completion, will add to the
knowledge base of dermatologic surgery. Clinical
Career Development Award in Health Care Policy:
$55,000 stipend (renewable
up to two years) to support establishment and
development of health care policy careers for
dermatologists. Applications accepted from
junior investigators who have completed formal
clinical training in a dermatology residency
program in the U.S. and are in the early stages
of their academic careers. Health policy
research includes outcome studies, information
system development and evaluation and development
of methods for delivery and practice of
population-based dermatology. Research
Career Development Award: $55,000 stipend
(renewable up to two years) to
assist in the transition from fellowship to
established investigator. Applications will
be accepted from junior investigators in the
early stages of their academic career.
Applicant must be a faculty member in a
department or division of dermatology,
demonstrate a strong commitment to skin research
and already have initial training (2-3 year
research fellowship or postdoctoral training) in
biomedical research. Fellowship
in Pediatric Dermatology: $45,000 stipend
to foster the development of
clinical scholars in pediatric dermatology that
will advance the field through patient care,
research and teaching. This award is
co-sponsored by the Dermatology Foundation and
Society of Pediatric Dermatology.
Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D., Ph.D.,
degree and have completed their clinical training
in a dermatology residency program in the
U.S. Applicants should be in the early
stages of their career development, be board
eligible or certified in dermatology and within
five years of completion of their residency at
the time of funding. Individuals with an
academic appointment at the level of Assistance
Professor or above are not eligible for this
award. Research must be conducted in the
United States in a department or division of
dermatology, and the applicant must designate a
preceptor who is a pediatric dermatologist and
member of the Society for Pediatric
Dermatology. Preference will be given to
applicants who are applying for fellowships at
institutions with a demonstrated training record
in pediatric dermatology. Fellowship
recipients must spend at least 50% of
their total effort on the research project. This
must be certified in writing by the chairman.
Dermatologist
Investigator Research Fellowship: $30,000 stipend
supports dermatologists who desire
research training and who have a commitment to an
academic career in medical or surgical
dermatology. Applicants must have an M.D.,
M.D.,Ph.D. or D.O. degree and have completed
clinical training in a dermatology residency
program in the U.S. Individuals with an
academic appointment at the level of Assistance
Professor or above are not eligible for this
award. The applicant must designate a
preceptor who has an academic appointment in
dermatology or in another program at the
sponsoring institution. The latter must be
approved by the head of the Department/Division
of Dermatology and a letter to that effect must
be included with the application. Research
Fellowship: $30,000 stipend for
support of research training. Applicants
must have an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
Individuals with an academic appointment at the
level of Assistance Professor or above are not
eligible for this award. Special fellowships are
available in the areas of epidermolysis bullosa
and melanoma. Applicants preceptor
must have an academic appointment in dermatology
or be a preceptor in another program at the same
institution if the latter has been approved by
the dermatology chair by letter included with the
application. (Only five (5) of these awards
will be available for funding in 2004.) Research
Grant: $20,000 award
for investigators in the early stages of their
career development to initiate a research project
in dermatology or cutaneous
biology. Research has to be performed within
a department or division of
dermatology. Special grants are available in
skin cancer, cutaneous pharmacology, ichthyosis,
and cutaneous surgery. Dermatopathology
Research Grant: $20,000
for one year. This award is
restricted to dermatologists or pathologists
who have recently completed a dermatopathology
fellowship in a division or department of
dermatology, pathology or dermatopathology and
who are attempting to embark on research
careers. Actual proposal may include bench
research, classical epidemiology, outcomes
analysis or other approaches. The focus
should be clearly and directly related to
advancing the field of dermatopathology. Patient
Directed Investigation Grant Award: $20,000
for one year to support medical and
surgical dermatologic studies that have potential
to directly benefit patients. It is the
expectation of the recipients of these awards
will be future clinical leaders in dermatology
helping to shape the future of the
specialty Applications are judged
competitively by a committee of recognized
experts in applied medical and surgical
dermatology. The purpose of funding is to
enhance the career development of clinical
investigators who have completed their
dermatology residency training in the U.S. and
are in the early stages of their
careers. Applicants must be sponsored by a
department or division of dermatology. Program
Development Grant Award: $10,000
for one year to support
development of scientific infrastructure in those
dermatology departments/divisions that are
accredited residency training centers but have
not successfully competed for Dermatology
Foundation funding during the most recent
five-year period. Applicant should be the
