John Marion Yarborough, Jr., M.D., “Master of Dermatologic Surgery”,
Named 2002 Practitioner of the Year
John Marion Yarborough, Jr., M.D., a member of the clinical dermatology faculty at Tulane University for nearly 40 years, has been selected as of the Practitioner of the Year by the Trustees of the Dermatology Foundation. Dr. Yarborough is in private practice in New Orleans and also serves on the clinical faculty at Louisiana State University’s Department of Dermatology.
The Practitioner of the Year Award was established by the Dermatology Foundation in 1976 and is awarded each year to a member of the specialty who demonstrates exemplary service as a practitioner, teacher and researcher.
As one specialty member said in nominating Dr. Yarborough, “John has always had an open door policy toward teaching and training physicians. In these days of high-priced courses and meetings, it is essential to recognize that John has never charged any physician who wished to come and learn from him.” From 1972 to 1986, Dr. Yarborough taught and trained six to eight residents each year from the Mayo Clinic in special preceptorships at his New Orleans office.
Dr. Yarborough holds both B.S. and M.D. degrees from Tulane University and served his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and Tulane University. He has served on numerous committees of the American Academy of Dermatology, was a director from 1989 through 1993 and director of the Advanced Surgical Techniques Symposium from 1981 through 1985.
A founding member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Yarborough served as the group’s President in 1993-1994 and as a Trustee of the Dermatology Foundation in 1990.
Dr. Yarborough has lectured throughout the world, published widely in scientific journals and is a member of the American Dermatological Association and the Noah Worchester Society.
A trained concert pianist, Dr. Yarborough has performed in the U.S., Europe and Australia and is a past member of the Metropolitan Opera National Council.
Dr. Yarborough will be honored as the 2002 Practitioner of the Year at the Dermatology Foundation’s Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 22, 2003, during the AAD Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
The Dermatology Foundation was created in 1964 by a group of concerned dermatologists in order to advance patient care through research. The nonprofit organization raises contributions from members of the specialty and the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and surgical industries to support a broad-based program of research investigations.
The Foundation is second only to the federal government as a source of funding for dermatologic research that addresses both medical and surgical practice concerns.Return to Press Releases
