Dermatology Foundation Announces $2.7 Million in Research Awards for 2003

 

At its 38th Annual Meeting on March 22, 2003 in San Francisco, California, the Dermatology Foundation announced $2.7 million in support of dermatologic research.

 

To support the future leaders, teachers, and innovators in the field of dermatology, the Foundation established a three-year Clinical Career Development Award in Dermatologic Surgery.  Four CCDA Awards in Dermatologic Surgery were awarded for funding in 2003.  In addition, in partnership with the American Society of Pediatric Dermatology, the Foundation established a one-year fellowship in pediatric dermatology.

 

2003 awards include:  9 Career Development Awards; 10 Clinical Career Development Awards; 4 Clinical Career Development Awards in Dermatologic Surgery; 3 Health Care Policy Clinical Career Development Awards; 6 Dermatologist Investigator Research Fellowships; 1 Fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology; 5 Patient Directed Investigation Grants; 5 Research Fellowships; 3 Program Development Grants; 1 Dermatopathology Research Grant; 2 Ichthyosis Research Grants; and 5 Research Grants.

 

Total revenues reached a record of $4.1 million in 2002, of which $2 million of physician support came from members of the Leaders Society and Annenberg Circle.

 

Corporate benefactors in the Honor Society, making significant contributions to the 2003 Research Awards Program, were: Platinum Benefactors ($200,000 to $500,000):  Dermik Laboratories, Inc.; Fujisawa Healthcare, Inc.; Galderma Laboratories, L.P.; and Ortho Neutrogena.  Gold Benefactors ($100,000 to $199,999):  Medicis, The Dermatology Company®; Stiefel Laboratories, Inc.; and Unilever Home and Personal Care – U.S.A.  Silver Benefactors ($50,000 to $99,999):  Avon Products, Inc.; Biogen, Inc.; L’Oreal Recherché; Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation; and Roche Laboratories.   

 

Dermatologic societies supporting the research base of dermatology through the Dermatology Foundation include:  the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatopathology, the Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.
